What does it cost to hire you? Would it matter what you are doing?
What would it cost to hire you to work where there was no additional payments for overtime, no health insurance, no employee insurance of any kind? Your salary would have to cover you for all those “extras”. What is your all-in price?
Some new friends recently asked their house helper this exact question. They didn’t want to hire someone and then have to pay them more for overtime. They aren’t paying health insurance. This domestic worker will live in their house and work at their pleasure. What does it cost to purchase a person’s labor “all-included”?
I bristled a bit when hearing this story. After all, I certainly wouldn’t agree to a job where I wasn’t properly compensated when I worked above and beyond. Sure, I’ve been in “exempt” positions where I was not eligible for overtime pay but was expected to perform it, however I received health insurance and a host of other benies.
I have been thinking about this in the context of the new U.S. legislation that (finally) includes homecare workers in the protections legally afforded other workers. By 2015, they will receive minimum wage and overtime pay. Why do we have to wait until then? I don’t know. Since having a kid, I am intimately aware of how demanding domestic labor is. (And I have it easy. I know that.)
